Camera LCD Magnifier

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:06 pm

By Andrew LiszewskiI love my Nikon D70 as much as I did when I first took it out of the box the day it was released. But I have to admit that over the years I’ve become jealous of more recent Nikon DSLR models which feature considerably larger LCD displays. Rumors about the new D700 […]

HTC Touch Pro passes FCC in CDMA flavor

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:06 pm

Among the many ducks that Sprint (and Verizon?) will need to get in a row in order to launch their own version of HTC’s Touch Pro, FCC certification ranks pretty freakin’ high on the list. No worries, though — it’s all good, because that just happened. An HTC device with model number “RAPH800″ has now popped up in the filing system, featuring CDMA with EV-DO on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. Of course, certification is certainly no indication of when a product’s actually going to launch, but if (heaven forbid) the glossy QWERTY WinMo slider gets delayed, at least we can call out anyone trying to slide the “we’re waiting on FCC clearance” excuse past us.

JesusPhone Breaks Just in Time for 3G (Verdict: Frak! I mean, YEAH!) [IPhone]

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:06 pm

My iPhone broke. Yes, the JesusPhone broke in Jesús’ pants. Or somewhere else, because I can’t remember exactly when it happened. I just found it that way in the morning.

It’s just the screen. It still works. Anyway, I was still going to bitch and bitch and bitch about it breaking just in time for iPhone 3G. And then I couldn’t decide what to whine about. I mean, I was sitting on the fence between “why do these things always break a week before a new version comes out? Isn’t that too much of a coincidence? Are they made for that? Why oh why did it break now?” and the second option: “Why don’t these things break the day before the new version comes out, so I don’t have to live with this imperfect iPhone classic for any more seconds than are absolutely necessary?”

So as you can see, looking at the stupidity of my own internal debate, I decided not to whine about anything, and will just wait until the 3G version comes out. NEXT WEEK!

[Ed Note: I lost one two weeks ago. I think it’s the same subconscious phenomenon going on.]

Sony Ericsson issues second profit warning of the year, hopes to break even in Q2

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:06 pm

Although Sony Ericsson just churned out a rather impressive array of new handsets this month, it seems the outfit is still having trouble securing record-setting profits. Truthfully, it’s struggling to break even, as evidenced by the second profit warning of 2008 that was issued last week. SE is pinpointing “disappointing European sales of its mid- and high-end mobile phones” as the reason it will likely not see a profit in Q2, and some analysts are suggesting that shipment delays and a dearth of low-end handsets also carry a share of the blame. ‘Course, the hotly-anticipated Xperia X1 could certainly make for a lovely Q3, but only time will tell if enough folks shell out for it to make a difference.

Lancerlink’s DDV-1080HD HD camcorder lowers the bar

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:06 pm

Watch out DXG, you’ve got a new rival in town, and it goes by the name Lancerlink. Just when we thought you had the cheap-o HD camcorder market all locked up, in comes this firm with a rather chintzy looking camcorder capable of logging clips at 1,440 x 1,080 (30fps) or 1,280 x 720 (60fps) in H.264 format. The 5-megapixel sensor can also snag stills, but considering that there’s just 90MB of free memory within, you should probably keep an SD / MMC / SDHC card nearby. You’ll also find a 3-inch LCD monitor, HDTV (component) output, USB connectivity and a rechargeable battery good for around four hours of use. The worst part, however, is the ¥49,800 ($474) price tag that’s attached to the July-bound DDV-1080HD, which makes it a few hundies more than most of DXG’s awfully similar collection.
